The City of St. Augustine Poet Laureate Norma Sherry at the podium from January "Floetry" kick-off.
The last few months have been packed with a number of poetry events, designed to lead up to April and National Poetry Month. In January we kicked off a Florida Poet series called "Floetry". January's featured poet was City of St. Augustine Poet Laureate Norma Sherry. Her performance was followed by a community open mic. In February, we gathered on the last Sunday of that month at the Maria Reyes Jones Gallery for a love themed open mic.
Poetry in the Gallery at Maria Reyes John Gallery.
In St. Augustine, we pull out all the stops in April for National Poetry Month. Thanks to the kindness of FSPA member Patricia Rahn Konover, Ancient City Poets will be able to produce copies of the event brochure to hand out to the first 200 poets and poetry lovers who attend St. Augustine PoetFest, a 3-day event at Waterworks and Flagler College April 11-13, 2024.Â
We are looking forward to welcoming the handful of dedicated guests. A Beat Poet Summit will kick off the St. Augustine PoetFest on Thursday, featuring Laureates from many states, followed by a community open mic hour. The next day, Friday, we will feature George Wallace who will deliver the keynote at 4:00 pm.
Claire Conroy will travel from Maine to visit Florida for the first time to present her poetry with live music improvisation on Saturday at twelve noon in the Student Center of Flagler College.Â
Outlaw Poet Ron Whitehead will travel from Tennessee to present a talk on "The Antinomian Outsider aspect of The Beat Generation" on Saturday at 2:00 pm.Â
St. Johns Cultural Council will present the winners of the Fourth Annual SJCC Haiku Contest, Saturday 3:30 pm, followed by an celebratory reception.
If you are a small business or a poetry lover who is interested in donating $500 or less to help sponsor our traveling poets please contact 2024 Festival Chair Chris Bodor via ANCIENT CITY POETS.
New York Poet George Wallace will deliver a keynote presentation on Friday April 12th at the St. Augustine PoetFest on the Campus of Flagler College.
HELP SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THE ANCIENT CITY POETS
Ancient City Poets has recently been awarded the distinction of being the local chapter of the Florida State Poets Association (FSPA). The monthly readings are open to all and qualify as the monthly chapter meeting. As a community of poets and poetry lovers, ACP has been gathering on the last Sunday of the month in Saint Augustine, Florida since August 2009. We have never charged a cover fee. We are inclusive, not exclusive. Come as you are.
